Educating schools on labour hire law, and engaging with the construction industry

In October, the Labour Hire Authority (LHA) is holding information sessions for Victorian schools, and is exhibiting at the Melbourne Build expo for the construction industry.

Providers and hosts attended an information session in Ballarat in September, to learn about their legal obligations and the tools and resources LHA provides to help.

Licensed labour hire providers operating in construction attended a targeted information session in Melbourne in September, hosted by Labour Hire Licensing Commissioner, Steve Dargavel. The attendees heard about:

  • recent actions out of the Victorian Government construction industry review
  • upcoming changes to strengthen labour hire laws in the industry
  • how LHA’s Construction Taskforce is working to address compliance issues and unlawful conduct
  • how to identify and manage common labour hire risks and issues.

LHA also exhibited at the Converge Expo in September, engaging with businesses, intermediaries and peak bodies operating in civil construction.

Upcoming activities

Sessions for schools

School principals, business managers and other decision-makers are encouraged to attend an upcoming online information session to learn more about:

  • the purpose and history of the labour hire licensing scheme
  • which businesses and activities require a licence
  • how to check and follow a provider’s licence
  • best practice tips when engaging a provider
  • what to expect at a site visit by LHA officers.

The sessions have been promoted to schools in collaboration with the Government, Catholic and independent school sectors.

Schools that pay a company to provide cleaners, security guards, ICT or temporary staff, are likely to be considered a ‘labour hire host’ under Victorian law, and should attend one of the two available sessions:
